Teams are also encouraged to seek funding from businesses and organizations in their communities. Parents and mentors may wish to contact their employers, as many companies offer grants to employees involved in youth STEM programs.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Michigan Grade and Edition Eligibility:<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>FIRST<\/em> in Michigan supports the <strong>FLL Explore Founders Edition<\/strong> for students in grades <strong>K\u20133<\/strong>. Although the <em>FIRST<\/em> Dashboard identifies the Explore Founders Edition as serving grades 2\u20134, Michigan teams should select the <strong>Founders Edition<\/strong> registration option and follow <em>FIRST<\/em> in Michigan\u2019s K\u20133 grade requirements. Teams applying for <em>FIRST<\/em> in Michigan grants or participating in Michigan events must meet the eligibility requirements listed on this website.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nTeams should carefully review each grant\u2019s eligibility requirements and application procedures before applying. Participation in a sanctioned <em>FIRST<\/em> in Michigan FLL Explore event is required for all grant recipients.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h5><strong>TEAM GRANTS<\/strong><\/h5>\n<div class=\"shortcode-toggle\">\n<div class=\"shortcode-toggle-head\">\n<i class=\"fa fa-plus\"><\/i> MI Dept. of Education FIRST Robotics State Grant \u2013 Opens Fall 2026\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"shortcode-toggle-box hide\">\n<h3>MDE FIRST Robotics Grant Eligibility<\/h3>\n<p>\n<em>FIRST<\/em> LEGO League Explore teams serving early-elementary students may be eligible for an MDE FIRST Robotics Grant if they are affiliated with an MDE-recognized public or private school, charter school, or academy.\n<\/p>\n<p>Eligible Explore teams may receive up to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>$1,140 for a rookie team<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>$720 for a returning team<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>A coach stipend in an amount to be announced<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nGrant funds are distributed incrementally to the school or district through its monthly state-aid payments.\n<\/p>\n<h3>How to Apply<\/h3>\n<p>\nApplications are submitted through MDE\u2019s <strong>NexSys system<\/strong>. This system is accessible to the school or district\u2019s Level 5 employee, who is typically a member of the finance or business office.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nCoaches should contact their school or district\u2019s Level 5 employee and provide the information needed to complete the application.\n<\/p>\n<h3>Information to Provide<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>FIRST Program:<\/strong> FIRST LEGO League Explore<\/li>\n<li><strong>FIRST Team Number:<\/strong> Use the team\u2019s accurate, permanent FIRST team number.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Team Name:<\/strong> If the team has not selected a name, a temporary name may be used so the application is not delayed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Affiliated School Building:<\/strong> Provide the name of the school with which the team is affiliated.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Coach Information:<\/strong> Provide the coach\u2019s name, email address, and phone number.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Verify the Team\u2019s School Affiliation<\/h3>\n<p>\nThe team\u2019s school affiliation must appear on its <em>FIRST<\/em> Team Profile. Lead Coaches\/Mentors 1 and 2 can review or update the Team Profile through the team\u2019s Dashboard in their <em>FIRST<\/em> Account.\n<\/p>\n<h3>Event Participation Requirement<\/h3>\n<p>\nTeams receiving an MDE FIRST Robotics Grant must participate in a sanctioned <em>FIRST<\/em> in Michigan FLL Explore event during the applicable grant season.\n<\/p>\n<h3>Michigan Progression of Programs<\/h3>\n<p>\nThe MDE FIRST Robotics Grant also includes award and coach-stipend components for other <em>FIRST<\/em> programs. To qualify, teams must be affiliated with an eligible Michigan school and aligned with the Michigan FIRST Progression of Programs:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>FIRST LEGO League Discover:<\/strong> Pre-K<\/li>\n<li><strong>FIRST LEGO League Explore:<\/strong> Grades K\u20133<\/li>\n<li><strong>FIRST LEGO League Challenge:<\/strong> Upper elementary<\/li>\n<li><strong>FIRST Tech Challenge:<\/strong> Middle school<\/li>\n<li><strong>FIRST Robotics Competition:<\/strong> High school<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"shortcode-toggle\">\n<div class=\"shortcode-toggle-head\">\n<i class=\"fa fa-plus\"><\/i> DonorsChoose\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"shortcode-toggle-box hide\">\n<p>\nEligible educators may create a DonorsChoose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.donorschoose.org\/teachers\">project<\/a> to request materials needed for their <em>FIRST<\/em> team. DonorsChoose has successfully helped fund materials for many <em>FIRST<\/em> teams, including teams in Michigan.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<em>FIRST<\/em> currently offers a sponsor-supported DonorsChoose funding opportunity through 3M. Funding is not guaranteed, and eligible projects must meet the applicable donor requirements. Coaches should ask team parents and mentors to check with their employers, as many companies provide grants, matching gifts, or volunteer awards to employees involved in youth STEM programs.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h5><strong>GRANT TIPS<\/strong><\/h5>\n<div class=\"shortcode-toggle\">\n<div class=\"shortcode-toggle-head\">\n<i class=\"fa fa-plus\"><\/i> Items to Check Before Submitting a Grant Application\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"shortcode-toggle-box hide\">\n<p>Before submitting a grant application, confirm the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The application includes the team\u2019s correct permanent team number. Most grants will not accept a temporary team number. Temporary team numbers typically begin with \u201c2020.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Any required proof-of-purchase documents are clearly labeled with the team number.<\/li>\n<li>The grant check\u2019s <strong>\u201cremit to\u201d name<\/strong> is the team\u2019s fiscal partner. This may be a school, school district, 501(c)(3) organization, foundation, or another organization that manages funds on the team\u2019s behalf. Grant checks cannot be made payable to an individual.<\/li>\n<li>Any returning teams affiliated with the school or organization are registered for the current season.<\/li>\n<li>The team has two screened and approved coaches.<\/li>\n<li>The Team Profile identifies the team\u2019s affiliated school or organization.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"shortcode-toggle\">\n<div class=\"shortcode-toggle-head\">\n<i class=\"fa fa-plus\"><\/i> Ways to Thank a Grant Sponsor\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"shortcode-toggle-box hide\">\n<p>\nTeams are encouraged to thank grant sponsors by recognizing their support on team social media and displaying their logo on appropriate team materials, such as team shirts, the robot, pit displays, giveaways, or the Engineering Notebook.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nSponsors may also volunteer at events or visit teams that received their funding.
