Each Class Pack serves 8 young learners (which equates to two \u201cgroups\u201d of 4 learners each); you may purchase several Class Packs to serve your entire class of students.\u00a0The goal: Build confidence, habits of learning, and teamwork skills with activities designed to harness young minds\u2019 natural curiosity.<\/p>\n<p><em>FIRST\u00a0<\/em>LEGO\u00a0League Discover Class Packs include the curriculum resources educators and facilitators need to lead early learners through 10 sessions that explore science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through play using the LEGO<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> Education STEAM Park. Preschool and PreK students work together to build models using LEGO\u00ae Duplo Blocks and utilize engineering notebooks to present what they learned. In Michigan,\u00a0<em>FIRST<\/em> LEGO League Discover is the <strong>sole program for Preschool and DevK students<\/strong>. Class Packs must be properly aligned in order and must participate with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>at least two class packs<\/strong><\/span> to be eligible for <em>FIRST<\/em>\u00a0in Michigan grants and participate in\u00a0<em>FIRST<\/em> in Michigan events.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/div><\/div><div class='shortcode-toggle'><div class='shortcode-toggle-head'><i class=\"fa fa-plus\"><\/i>Find an Existing Team or Start Your Own<\/div><div class='shortcode-toggle-box hide'><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a class=\"elementor-accordion-title\" style=\"color: #000000;\" tabindex=\"0\">How do I get my child on a team?<\/a><\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<em>FIRST<\/em> LEGO League Discover is only available through Class Packs, which would usually happen in a classroom or structured after-school program setting. <em>FIRST<\/em> in Michigan does not place students on teams, and <em>FIRST<\/em> privacy policies forbid us from sharing coach contact information. Our role is to assist new teams in forming by connecting them to local resources to help them be successful and sustainable. If the team is full, or if there is no team existing, we would be happy to assist you in starting a new team!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Almost all teams in Michigan are organized through elementary schools, so contact your child\u2019s school to find out if a team exists and how to join.\u00a0If your school does not currently offer this program for pre-kindergarten through first grade students, please ask your school staff to reach out to Michigan&#8217;s Program Delivery Partner, Heidi Ferguson, at<a href=\"mailto:heidi@firstinmichigan.org\"> heidi@firstinmichigan.org,<\/a>\u00a0for answers to questions or guidance in starting Discover!<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Some 4-H groups, Girl Scout groups, and youth organizations also have teams. Through this affiliation, the team number and the Kit of Parts is the property of the school\/organization for reuse year to year. Grant funds cannot be paid out to individuals.<br \/>\nFor the MI Dept. of Education (MDE) FIRST Robotics grant, teams must be affiliated with an MDE recognized public or non-public school, charter, or academy.<br \/>\nWhen registering your team, make sure to select the affiliated school or organization, as this is necessary for grant payment.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/div><\/div><div class='shortcode-toggle'><div class='shortcode-toggle-head'><i class=\"fa fa-plus\"><\/i>Register a Team<\/div><div class='shortcode-toggle-box hide'><\/span><br \/>\n<strong>Create or access your account<\/strong><br \/>\nTeam registration and administration is done through the\u00a0<i>FIRST<\/i>\u00a0account of the individual(s) holding a key role for the team beginning in early May each year. You will receive a permanent team number to identify your team at events and on grant applications.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Veteran Teams \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0Choose your team name from the previous year. Remember that a team\u2019s team number and Kit of Parts is reusable and retained from year to year. Veteran teams register for the season using their team\u2019s previously assigned team number. Some example of tasks parents can complete include: ordering t-shirts, buying supplies, building the robot table, providing snacks at meetings, organizing transportation to events, coordinating lunch at events, finding sponsors, assisting at meetings, and volunteering at events.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/div><\/div><div class='shortcode-toggle'><div class='shortcode-toggle-head'><i class=\"fa fa-plus\"><\/i>Create a Team Budget<\/div><div class='shortcode-toggle-box hide'><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What is a typical team budget?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe 8-student Classpack registration is $ 197 and approximately $36 for shipping and handling ($233 total).\u00a0 This includes the team\u2019s Discover Set, Team Meeting Guide, Engineering Notebooks, Discover More Sets, and Thinkscape Access.<\/p>\n<p>Steam Park Sets for 8 students are $220 and shipping and handling is $15 ($235 total).\u00a0 The Steam Park Set is the core, base set for Discover and is reusable from year-to-year.<\/p>\n<p>The budget for the first year includes both the Classpack registration and the Steam Park Sets and is $468.\u00a0 The budget for veteran Classpacks is $233 since the steam park sets are reusable each year so they only need to be purchased the initial year.\u00a0 Teams may also budget for professional development or miscellaneous expenses like extra Duplo pieces, cost for certificates, decorations and snacks at the end-of-season celebration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do teams find funding?<br \/>\n<\/strong>Teams are encouraged to take responsibility for their budget. Many teams engage in fundraisers and reach out to area businesses for sponsorship in order to sustain the team.<\/p>\n<p>Have the parents of team members check with their\u00a0<span class=\"il\">employers<\/span>\u00a0as many companies offer grant funds for youth STEM programs where employees are actively involved.<\/p>\n<p>Sponsorship isn\u2019t limited to financial contributions.
