Event Registration
  • The home event assignment list will be posted this evening at the Michigan FLLC Events page (see ‘Michigan Team List’ in the top links list.) Registration for events (including accepting your home event or submitting a ranked list of preferred alternates) will be open Oct. 9 (noon) until Oct. 13 as described in the Event Registration page, which has all registration details.
  • Two key points to remember when registration opens:
    • You must fill out a registration form, even if you are accepting your home event. It also collects team size, accessibility requests, and emergency contact info.
    • No event registration requests are accepted by email or phone, only on the form.
  • You may not be assigned to the event(s) closest to you. All teams must be scheduled into an event, so often teams must be adjusted one way or another to fit everyone, or an event may be full from teams within the immediate area.
  • Remember that we cannot use the FIRST Dashboard to register FLLC teams for events, so you won’t see events listed there.
  • Team names in the FIRSTinspires.org Dashboard must be final by October 13 when event registration closes. A list of names will be pulled the next day and then no changes will be updated after that time. You cannot change your team name with the event host, so your name on October 13 will be final.
  • Once the final team placement list is posted, then event-specific pages will be populated and more information about your event will be sent.
  • If you have not yet registered your team for the season, you may be receiving this email but you will not be placed into an event. If you need help registering or have any barriers or questions, please reach out right away so that we can make sure you are assigned to an event! Teams who register after registration begins will be placed into events after registration closes in any spaces which are left.

Team Paperwork
  • Now is the time to start getting your team’s “paperwork” in order as outlined on the Event Readiness page. It can take time to get coaches screened and consent forms signed, so start now. Rosters will be due the Monday before your event. You can find directions for completing your team’s required roster and consent forms at the Event Readiness page. If you have any questions on this process after reading through the Event Readiness page, please let me know.
  • If you have 3rd graders on your team, you will not be able to register them through the FIRST Dashboard with this usual process. Email angela@firstinmichigan.org for alternate instructions for those students.

MDE 99h Grant Open Now
  • The MDE grant opened October 1 and is open until December 2 at noon.
  • The MDE grant (often referred to as the “State Grant”) is now open. You can find the application in NexSys under “99h”. Please alert the person in your district responsible for submitting the grant. School personnel who are “Level 5s” (usually someone in finance, superintendent’s office, or principal) can access the NexSys grant system. This is a single application per school district or school (for those not in a district) submitted on behalf of all of the FIRST teams in that district or school. This grant is administrated by the MDE and not FIRST in Michigan. Once you know who is responsible for submitting it, please fill out this form in case we need to contact them.
  • The RFP and other grant information for 2024-25 is no longer at techplan.org. It is now hosted on the Michigan.gov site.
  • Teams must be affiliated by an MDE-recognized ISD, district, public or nonpublic school. The team must be registered for the 2024-25 season before the grant closes to be eligible for consideration. Teams must participate in one official FIM FLLC event in the 2024-25 season to meet the competition requirement of the grant.
  • Payout of the grant is done by the MDE and usually occurs in March. Awarded grant funds are paid to the team’s fiscal partner i.e. district/school on behalf of the awarded teams in that district/school. Teams should work with their district/school to access the funding. Funding can solely be used by the team to which they were awarded.
  • These are the maximum award amounts. The MDE has applied a blanket percentage reduction to the award payout amounts for the past few years in order to stay within the grant’s funding allocation. This is decided upon by the MDE and not FIRST in Michigan. This decision is not made until after the application closes and the MDE has had a chance to process all the grant applications.

DonorsChoose Opportunity

We have received word about a sponsor-driven DonorsChoose funding opportunity generously supported by 3M for teachers with FIRST teams. Follow the two steps below, and your project MAY be funded. Some notes: Funding cannot be used to cover the cost of team registrations. Smaller requests are more frequently funded.

  1. Create your DonorsChoose project.
  2. Apply for selective FIRST funding through this Google form managed by DonorsChoose.

Participation Reminder
  • In Michigan, we run a slightly different progression of programs from FIRST national. In Michigan, FIRST LEGO League is an elementary school only program with teams comprised solely of elementary school aged/grade team members. To attend an event or receive any grants, teams must be aligned to the FIRST in Michigan progression of programs, consisting ONLY of: All students in grades 4-5, as well as students in grade 6 (maximum) IF they attend an elementary school, and individual students in grade 3 who are “playing up” because it is a better fit for them.
  • FIRST LEGO League Challenge team size is capped at 10. No exceptions are made, and smaller teams than this are highly encouraged (6-8 students.) Multiple teams out of a given school/organization are welcome, and we have grants to fully fund additional teams at a school. Let me know if you would like more teams!
  • Each team will need two registered, screened coaches in order to register for events in Michigan. Coaches can be registered to multiple teams. All email communication will be sent to the two registered coaches, as well as the team admin if there is one registered.

EBLASTS
  • FIRST in Michigan FIRST LEGO League Challenge team eblasts (sent from angela@firstinmichigan.org) are sent to the Team Administrator and Lead Coach 1 and 2 for each team. The eblast distribution list is pulled from the current FIRST Team Registration System, per FIRST protocol.
